View a collection of stunning murals and large wall paintings created between 1975-1989 at Casa Zapata, an undergraduate residence at Stanford University.
Led by Gina Hernandez who has done extensive research on the murals and paintings in Casa Zapata and lived there as resident fellow for many years, this tour emphasizes the specific methods of production of the murals painted by professional artists and students and reflecting the political and cultural history of the Chicano community. These artworks, created in rapid succession over a 15-year period, coincided with the height of the Chicano Movement, a cultural and political mobilization to advance equality, civil rights, and educational access for Mexican Americans in the United States. Light refreshments to follow.
Gina Hernandez '89, MLA '23, is a lecturer in Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity (by courtesy) and Director of Community Engaged Learning for the Institute for Diversity in the Arts. In addition to her Stanford degrees, Hernandez received an M.F.A. from University of California, Los Angeles. She was a resident fellow at Casa Zapata from 2007 to 2013.
