Project Description

JSK Voices is an audio project designed to capture the memories of and strengthen the connections between alumni of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University. The project paired JSK alumni from different fellowship class years to have a conversation about their experiences before, during and after their time at Stanford. The collection features personal stories that range from the challenges and trauma of being a war correspondent to the joy of having a year to learn and discover new ideas as a fellow. The conversations were recorded in connection with the JSK Alumni Reunion at Stanford, held in July 2023.

Since 1966, JSK has welcomed a small group of professional journalists from around the world to spend an academic year at Stanford. Originally a sabbatical program called the Professional Journalism Fellowships, the program has evolved ever since to meet the changing needs of journalism. At present, the JSK Journalism Fellowships empower diverse journalism leaders to succeed as effective change agents, sustain democratic communities and defend press freedom around the world.

The JSK Voices project was conceived by JSK Director Dawn Garcia and executed by JSK Class of 2020 Alumni Krista Almanzan and Jim Colgan.
