John W. Gardner was a Stanford alum and trustee, president of the Carnegie Corporation, and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare during the Johnson Administration. He was also the founder of Common Cause and Independent Sector. The society supported interviews aiming the document the quiet influence of this charismatic mentor and leader and the public service fellowship named in his honor.
